Key Bridge Image to Appear on Every Arlington Vehicle
Release Date: Friday, March 13th 2009Rosslyn, VA –Key Bridge, the gateway into Arlington, is the inspiration for the winning image that will appear on every Arlington vehicle. The artwork created by Dane Fitzmaurice, a junior at Washington-Lee High School, won the majority of votes in a countywide art contest to choose an image for the new car tax decal which will be placed on 155,000 windshields.
Winning artist Dane Fitzmaurice created the image in two hours during a commercial art class at the Arlington Career Center, using the computer design program Adobe Photoshop. He says his family always drives past, over or under Key Bridge and that it represents the contest’s theme, ‘What Arlington Means to Me.’ “That vision of the Key Bridge dramatically silhouetted against the water, and the boats occasionally passing, by gave me a peaceful vibe, “said Fitzmaurice.
Three of the four images in the contest featured Rosslyn sites. The fourth focused on neighboring Arlington National Cemetery. More than 3,200 votes were cast on line and through the Sun Gazette Newspaper, up about 28 percent from the year before. The contest is sponsored by the Arlington County Treasurer’s Office and the winner was announced at the Arlington County Board meeting on February 24.
“The Rosslyn BID was happy to see that this slice of Arlington and neighboring Arlington National Cemetery inspired the young artists. The results show that many of those who voted also value a number of Rosslyn’s treasures,” said Cecilia Cassidy, Executive Director of the Rosslyn BID and Rosslyn Renaissance.
The Key Bridge image pulled in 30.8 percent of the vote. Rosslyn’s skyline was a close second with 27.3%. An image of the Iwo Jima Memorial came in third with 24.7%. The Tomb of the Unknowns received 17.2% of the vote.
Each of the finalists received a $500 savings bond. The tax decals with the Key Bridge image will be mailed out this summer.
