Rosslyn Kicks Off the Holiday Season by Lighting the Washington Skyline

Rosslyn, Va. – November 30, 2010 – The Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID) and Rosslyn Renaissance will light up Rosslyn’s skyline with the 17th Annual LIGHT UP Rosslyn ceremony on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. As one of the area’s most celebrated holiday events, TBD-TV Anchor Morris Jones and Arlington officials will host spectators under the Jumbotron at 1100 Wilson Boulevard as they flip a giant light switch at exactly 6:31 p.m. during a live broadcast on TBD-TV.

Rosslyn property owners participate in LIGHT UP Rosslyn by placing holiday lights along the rooftops of their buildings. In addition to watching the lighting ceremony, spectators will enjoy complimentary chili and hot cocoa courtesy of Santa Fe Café. Monday Properties will provide cookies and hot cider. The Potomac Harmony Chorus and Beltway Brass will perform during the ceremony.

Over the past two years most Rosslyn buildings have gone green, changing all of their rooftop lights to energy-efficient LED bulbs. The result is an 80 percent energy savings compared to traditional lights. The skyline will be illuminated through January 31, 2011.

The event supports Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network (A-SPAN) through the ‘Light Up Rosslyn, Light Up A Life: Warm Winter Clothing Drive.’ Donations are being accepted at drop-boxes throughout various Rosslyn properties through December 2. Rosslyn BID Ambassadors will also be present at LIGHT UP Rosslyn to collect new or gently-used clothing and outerwear that will be shared with Arlington’s homeless throughout the winter months.

“The LIGHT UP is part of the Rosslyn Renaissance 20th Anniversary celebration. RR began this tradition in 1993, and the illuminated skyline continues to be a bright reminder of the holidays. We are delighted to help our community commemorate the holiday season with this fun and celebratory event,” said Cecilia Cassidy, Executive Director of Rosslyn Renaissance and the Rosslyn BID. “We also encourage Rosslyn residents and workers to join us in helping A-SPAN and the homeless in our community by bringing warm winter clothing to the celebration.”

Artisphere, Arlington’s art space for everyone, is also celebrating LIGHT UP Rosslyn with a holiday open house and special discounts. After the ceremony, attendees are invited to visit Artisphere, sip a warm drink and wander through three art galleries, four performance spaces, a 4,000 square foot ballroom, and the free Wi-Fi town square.

Light Up Rosslyn attendees that purchase one full price ticket at $25 will get one free for the National Chamber Ensemble (NCE)’s Sunday, December 12 Home for the Holidays concert. Hosted by the Rosslyn BID’s Cecilia Cassidy, the December 12 4:00 p.m. performance features Tchaikovsky, Corelli and Vivaldi’s “Winter.” The Cantus Youth Choir of the renowned group Choralis will join NCE to perform seasonal favorites followed by a rousing sing-along. It promises to be a heartwarming and exciting event for the whole family. This offer is only good on the evening of December 2. Artisphere is two blocks from the Rosslyn Metro and offers free parking evenings and weekends after 5:00 p.m. with validation. For more information, visit www.artisphere.com.
