Rosslyn LIGHT UP Goes Green

Release Date: Wednesday, December 3rd 2008

ROSSLYN, VA – The Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID) and Rosslyn Renaissance (RR) are teaming up again to light up Rosslyn’s picturesque skyline for the holidays. As LIGHT UP celebrates its 15th anniversary, it is becoming more environmentally friendly. The Rosslyn skyline will shine with the help of almost 10,000 LED bulbs, replacing many of the old incandescent bulbs. This green step means the new bulbs will use 80% less energy.

Four property owners – Brookfield Properties, Charles E. Smith/Vornado, Monday Properties, and Virginia Management - are leading the way by replacing the older bulbs on their buildings rooftops. Collaboratively, they are reducing power consumption by 88,532 watts atop 21 buildings.

“Monday Properties is honored to lead the change towards a cleaner environment. This implementation continues our commitment to reducing the carbon footprint across our portfolio,” said Linda Cogburn, Monday Properties Vice President of Property Management.   “We are excited to be an integral part of LIGHT UP, making Rosslyn a festive environment for the entire community.”

The LIGHT UP Ceremony happens December 4 at 5:30 pm in front of Monday’s 1100 Wilson Blvd. building, under the WJLA-TV JumboTron. During the ceremony, WJLA/Channel 7 Meteorologist Doug Hill will join County Board Chairman Walter Tejada and others to flip the light switch to turn on the lights for the holiday season. BID and RR Executive Director Cecilia Cassidy says this is just a first step. “We were happy that many of our property managers decided to take this step to make the holiday season green in Rosslyn. We know that many other buildings will follow.”

The LIGHT UP Celebration also corresponds with a warm winter clothing collection drive. Clothing collected throughout the Rosslyn BID will be donated to A-SPAN, the Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network, to help the homeless brave the cold this winter season.
