Rosslyn, VA - The Rosslyn Business Improvement District ushers in the 2009 holiday season with its LIGHT UP ROSSLYN Ceremony on Thursday, December 3 at 1100 Wilson Blvd. The ceremony begins at 5:30 pm in front of Monday Properties’ 1100 Wilson Blvd. building, under the WJLA-TV/ABC-7 JumboTron. At 6:45 p.m. WJLA-TV Meteorologist Doug Hill will join Arlington dignitaries to flip a giant light switch and illuminate the Rosslyn rooftops for the holidays. The event includes performances by the Metropolitan Chorus and Beltway Brass. Rosslyn’s Santa Fe Café will serve chili and hot cocoa and Monday Properties will provide cookies and cider.

This marks the second year Rosslyn property owners switch from incandescent bulbs to energy-efficient LED bulbs to make the holiday event “green.” More than 12,000 LED light bulbs are part of LIGHT UP Rosslyn – creating an 80% energy savings over standard bulbs.  The Rosslyn skyline will be illuminated through January 31, 2010.

Two new trophy buildings in the Rosslyn skyline add lights to their rooftops this year. Turnberry Tower, Rosslyn’s newest residential property, will brighten its unique roofline, and the Waterview complex which houses the Corporate Executive Board, Deloitte, Rosetta Stone, as well as the Hotel Palomar and Waterview Condominiums, also add energy-efficient bulbs.

The Rosslyn BID also purchased 1,000 LED bulbs and worked with property managers to illuminate balconies and bridges closer to Rosslyn’s busy streets. The Freedom Park bridges and neighboring terraces will be part of LIGHT UP ROSSLYN this holiday season. This effort was made possible by a partnership with Monday Properties and Beacon Capital Partners. Additionally, the BID is adding ten holiday wreaths to crosswalks and overpasses in the urban district.

The Rosslyn BID also coordinates the “LIGHT UP ROSSLYN, Light Up a Life” Warm Winter Clothing Collection Drive. Boxes are placed in buildings for residents and workers’ donations of new or gently used clothing. The clothing will be donated to A-SPAN, the Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network, which will distribute the clothing to the homeless during the winter season.
