Dogwood is a quiet monument to sitting. The sculptural form is inspired by a Dogwood branch, the state tree of Virginia, and carved from limestone, a material of significance to the history of monumental building in the Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia region. This specific site, in the urbanized section of Rosslyn, required an object with a straightforward natural presence, weight, and offers an opportunity for repose.

Dogwood can be seen as a pair with Continuuma collaborative work by Ashcraft and Chung, enlivening Key Boulevard with its 17 mosaic panels, each of which depict motion through a sequence of abstracted botanical forms.

Though Continuum is two-dimensional and Dogwood sculptural, their references to nature unite these works.
