Pub in the Park
Every Friday evening before Rosslyn Cinema, enjoy beer and wine in Gateway Park
This summer marks the first year the Rosslyn BID is bringing an outdoor bar to Gateway Park before our free Friday night outdoor movies. Starting at 5pm, attendees can sip top-notch beer and wine at a classy outdoor bar that is set up in the park.
"We hope this will become a fun summer tradition in Rosslyn," says BID Senior Events Manager Sophie Barral. "People can come to the park after work with their friends or colleagues to relax, have a drink and enjoy one of our neighborhood's favorite green spaces."
A typical happy hour features the following:
- Port City Optimal Wit
- Port City Derecho Common
- Port City Monumental IPA
- Port City Downright Pilsner
- Bold Rock Hard Cider
- Red and White (from scratch)
- Pinot Grigio
- Red Blend (Cabernet and Syrah)
Jon Hoffmeyer, owner of the mobile event bar, says he and his wife had the idea for this business because they were frustrated by the poor setups of wine and beer tents at wine festivals and other events they had attended. Hoffmeyer has worked in the hospitality industry for 25 years, so he's had a lot of experience in this area.
"I questioned why there couldn't be something more upscale and elegant that would attract more people," he says.
Hoffmeyer soon drew up the design for his bar and worked with a close friend in his hometown of Boswell, Pa., to bring it to life.
"Every Wednesday for six months I traveled to Pennsylvania to work on the bar for eight to ten hours, and then went home [to Maryland] in the morning," he says. "It was a lot of trial and error."
The bar that is used at Rosslyn Cinema is the original prototype Hoffmeyer designed. It weighs two tons, and is made of aluminum, stainless steel and a PVC outer shell. Hoffmeyer hauls it to Rosslyn each Friday on a 26-foot hydraulic trailer. He can drop it in place at the event site in ten minutes. It then takes anywhere from a half-hour to an hour to set it up, depending on the needs of a particular event.
Each week, the BID has also invited a different food truck to participate in Rosslyn Cinema, serving everything from pizza to barbecue to banh mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwiches) to -- of course -- popcorn. There will also be fun outdoor games nearby, including cornhole.
Be sure to come by the park Friday nights beginning June 8 to experience the Pub in the Park and a warm summer night in the park.
