Rosslyn's event planner
Meet Events Manager Alexa McCarthy
Events Manager, Alexa McCarthy, joined the Rosslyn BID in January 2020. She is a native of New Jersey, but mostly grew up in Centreville, VA. Alexa now lives in Arlington, VA with her fiancé and their cat. She graduated from UNC Wilmington with a degree in Marketing. Previously Alexa was a Senior Manager of Events for the Washington Nationals.
Rosslynva.org: What does your perfect day look like?
Alexa McCarthy: Any day at the beach is a perfect day! In my life in Arlington, a perfect day starts without having to wake up early, and getting a workout in. From there, running any needed errands, and then just relaxing with my fiancé and family! Pretty simple, but I like to spend days where I accomplish tasks first, and then get to relax with the people I love.
Rosslynva.org: Who is your role model? Why?
Alexa McCarthy: My role model has always been my mom. Managing the lives of five active kids (at one point all 10 and under), while making it a point to try to never say no to something new we wanted to do, is nothing short of heroism. All of us were extremely active in school and sports, and four of the five of us went on to be college athletes with none of us being closer than 2.5 hours to home, and she managed to make it to almost all competitions. Even now, there are still two siblings that are in college and athletes, and my mom makes it to all of their events while working a full-time job and a secondary part-time job. The older and more experienced I get, the more I realize just how much she has sacrificed personally to make the lives of her kids the best and most fulfilled they can be.
Rosslynva.org: What do you like best about your job?
Alexa McCarthy: I’m still very new, but I think I’m going to enjoy getting to be collaborative and creative with the team the most!
Rosslynva.org: What’s your guilty pleasure?
Alexa McCarthy: This is a tie, between true crime anything (e.g., shows and movies, podcasts, books) and reality TV (quick favorites are The Challenge and Vanderpump Rules).
Rosslynva.org: What’s your philosophy toward work?
Alexa McCarthy: In the events world, I always like to be prepared. The more prepared you are in advance and can anticipate what is to come, the better equipped you are to be responsive as situations arise!
Rosslynva.org: What are you good at?
Alexa McCarthy: I think I’m good at staying organized! I also think I’m good at understanding the needs of others. I’ve always been a very empathetic person, which has been a great trait to have in my events profession. I’m able to use that skill to connect with people to understand needs and determine the “why” and make it a reality!
Rosslynva.org: What’s your fondest memory from childhood?
Alexa McCarthy: All of my favorite memories relate around my family – I am the oldest of five siblings, with the youngest sibling being 10 years younger than me, so we are all very close. I would say my fondest memories would be going to the beach in North Carolina together for a week many summers.
Band: I wouldn’t say I have a favorite band, but one of my favorite things to do outside of work is to go to concerts! Usually for birthdays and Christmas, my fiancé and I get each other concert tickets instead of traditional gifts. My favorite show is a tie between Bruno Mars and P!nk – I’ve seen both twice, and both times I was absolutely blown away! At both Bruno Mars shows, I realized that the crowd was having such a good time that barely anyone was recording on their phones, which I think speaks to how much of an experience that he creates. P!nk’s acrobatics during her shows are like nothing you’ve ever seen, and her voice is still so great during them. You’ll leave that show feeling like you can fly!
TV show: The Office
Book: The Devil in the White City
Movie: I don’t have a specific favorite, but a few that I always watch if I see on are Grease, You’ve Got Mail, The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia!
Any other fun facts? Growing up, I was a competitive athlete my whole life through college! I was a competitive gymnast until about the age of 15, when I then switched to diving. I ended up diving in college at UNC Wilmington all four years, and was one of the Swim and Dive team captains my senior year. Also, I love animals! Previously, I worked for the Nationals, and one day someone found a kitten in the service tunnel. Thankfully, the team is equipped to handle animals within the stadium, and we were able to corral her and get her to a veterinary for a check-up. We learned that she was only a few months old and barely weighed a pound, and because of her nature around humans, they believed someone in the area had a litter of kittens and abandoned them. After that, I ended up adopting her and naming her Drogon, after the main dragon in Game of Thrones! I’ve had her for about four and a half years.
