11/23/2022: Shop Local and Save with Open Rewards

Earn cash back while supporting small businesses in Arlington

A new cash-saving app is here just in time for Small Business Saturday! Arlington residents can save money while showing some love to their favorite local businesses with the new Open Rewards program. This customer rewards program, launched as a partnership between Arlington Economic Development (AED)’s BizLaunch and technology company BluDot, encourages shoppers to earn cash back rewards while spending at local small businesses.

You can enroll in the program by downloading the Open Rewards app on your smartphone and adding payment cards to your account, or uploading receipts from small business merchants.

There is no cost for businesses or consumers to participate in Open Rewards, and Arlington local businesses in the personal service, restaurant, and retail sectors are automatically enrolled. Each transaction earns 5% in rewards, which then can be used to support more small businesses. Small businesses that would like to be added to the program can do so by visiting BluDot's website.

Executive assistant Ayeshah Bashir goes for Inca Social’s Inca Burger, including an 8 oz patty, mozzarella, avocado lime sauce, onions, tomato, lettuce and Inca sauce. And if you’re searching for some spice, look no further than Hot Lola’s Sando, which is digital experience manager Justin Bensan’s choice (at level 5 heat “Get Lit!”). 10/19/2022: Rosslyn Community Blood Drive

Give back with a donation on Nov. 1!

Roll up your sleeve and give back by donating at the Rosslyn Community Blood Drive hosted by The Health Management Academy! On Tuesday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Inova Blood Donor Services Bloodmobile will be stationed at 1100 Wilson Blvd. Please reserve your appointment ahead of time at the link below and bring a valid photo ID and face mask to your appointment.

Nisha Patel, Rosslyn BID marketing and communications director, has been regularly donating blood for 10 years in honor of her mother who passed away from leukemia, a cancer of the blood.

“Seeing what she went through day in, day out and how strong she continued to be encouraged me to take action. It’s the least I can do,” she says. “Even if you personally don’t know someone who is in the hospital, every blood donation goes directly to someone in need, so you CAN make a difference.”

If you’re thinking about giving for the first time, Nisha also has a few tips to prepare you for the best donation experience possible.

“Eat healthy the week leading up to your donation, including iron-rich foods (You’ll need to pass an iron test before donating!). And of course, stay hydrated and drink extra water. Don’t worry – there are lots of sweet and savory snacks in the cards after you’re done donating!”

Inca Social’s Fito Garcia shares fun food, events, and more!

Hispanic Heritage Month runs Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, and in celebration, we’re highlighting one of Rosslyn’s newest Latino-owned businesses and neighborhood favorite, Inca Social! Owner Fito Garcia was born in Puerto Rico, but has also lived in Peru, Mexico, and now the United States. He says his experience across many countries has shown him the beauty of variety across Latin cultures.

“There are many things that make the various cultures similar, but many that also make them different, and show how diverse Latin culture is. This month reminds me of my family and my background. Latin people treat you like family, and when you come into Inca, we’ll treat you like family.”

Inca Social will also treat you to an incredible menu of Peruvian dishes from brunch to lunch and dinner!

“The lomo saltado is my go-to dish – veggies, shrimp, steak, or chicken, and you can make it spicy or sweet to change it how you like. I could eat that dish every day just by switching it up,” he says. “Aji de gallina (Peruvian chicken stew) is also one of my favorite dishes of all time – so delicious! And of course, you can’t go wrong with ceviche.”

Join Fito at Inca Social for Latin Heritage Happy Hours on Saturdays Oct. 1, Oct. 8, and Oct. 15, and next Wednesday, Oct. 5, for a special chef-crafted Peruvian fusionsix-course dinner.
