Making places better
Meet Rosslyn's Urban Planning and Design Manager Douglas Plowman
Douglas Plowman, Urban Planning and Design Manager, joined the Rosslyn BID in March 2017. A native of Birmingham (UK), Doug now lives in Glover Park with his wife, Lauren, and their dog, Buzz. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a master’s degree in Urban Planning.
Rosslynva.org: What does your perfect day look like?
Douglas Plowman: I would get up as the sun is coming up (easier in the summer!) and take the dog for a long walk. I typically Skype with family and friends back in the UK to catch up on recent events. Following this, I’d have a coffee (essential!) and go for a bike ride with my teammates exploring the roads of Maryland or Virginia. Arriving home, my wife and I would head out to explore the city, and try out a new restaurant with friends.
Rosslynva.org: What do you like best about your job?
DP: I love the variety that my job offers. One day I can be reviewing plans for a new development coming into Rosslyn, the next, I am working on the latest placemaking opportunity to make Rosslyn an even better place to live and work.
Rosslynva.org: What’s your guilty pleasure?
DP: Coffee. I am still working on pulling the perfect espresso shot!
Rosslynva.org: What's your philosophy toward work?
DP: Work hard, treat people well, and good things will happen.
Rosslynva.org: What's your fondest memory from childhood?
DP: As a child, I was lucky to travel to some pretty amazing places with my family. This helped broaden my perspective, and probably fueled my curiosity and interest in living abroad.
Television Show: Top Gear (only the British one!) and now the Grand Tour. Or any bike race that I can find!
Color: Blue, now followed closely by purple!
Pastime: I love soccer. My family has held season tickets at Aston Villa (my hometown soccer team) since 1998. I will always jump at the opportunity to watch them whenever I get the chance.
